Artist's Comments

first i thought it had crippled wings, but while i took some shots, it began to inflate them
i didn't get a good series with the same perspective, because it crawled around on the wall all the time
that's also the reason why i miss a good intermediate between the first and second shot
as a series this could have been much more interesting ...

Yikes.. it's so creepy yet so fascinating...
Austrian flies must be pretty docile and peaceful.. and they look so clean too! Our flies here are just annoying and black :/

Facinating. I didn't know that flies did that. Great series. How was this lighted.

all insects do that, because when they hatch from eggs or cocoons or whatever the wings are crumpled, and they use air pressure to inflate the little air tubes that make the basic support structure of their wings

for lighting, i use a newer prototype of this one [link] but where it bends down it expands into a roughly postcard-sized softbox
what do you use? looks like a macro double flash in some pictures, something like the canon mt-24ex maybe?
:icongraemo:
you don't know how much i'd like to shoot one of those really fat black ones or a nice shiny bluebottle, but so far they always fled when i aimed :p

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about your great frankenmacro set up; nice to see that it is still giving you the best macros on DA. I'm using the mt-14 ex ringlight.

i don't use the inverting converter anymore since i got the 100mm macro lens, which is simply much sharper, but i won't buy an expensive macro flash unless they double the guide numbers, they are all so weak

Your pictures make bugs seem less scary. (That's a very disturbing comment coming from me.)

Art is desperate.

simply amazing how you got this shot! Flys are officially fascinating~ Really great series. But man, he must've been quite large, almost like the horse flys we have around here in Virginia.

C'est magnifique mais
ce n'est pas la musique
:icongraemo:
it was a classic ~10mm size, how large are your horseflies?
